Conversion of Gravel Pit to Nature Reserve. The Bumpy is a former Victorian gravel pit, owned by Littlebury Parish Council, in the hamlet of Littlebury Green. It is less than an acre in size, but is being managed by The Bumpy Volunteer Group as a nature reserve. We have had some success with badgers & owls moving in, and are currently trying to get the site recognised officially as a Local Nature Reserve, by Natural England. The site is open 24/7 to visitors, and we run Open Days, work parties, moth surveys etc to raise its profile.

Saffron Walden Community Energy is a not for profit “Community Energy” organisation, set up in 2021 to work on grass-roots, carbon-reduction initiatives in Saffron Walden, Uttlesford & Essex primarily.
We are a group of renewable energy enthusiasts who are keen to foster and encourage local activity in the transition to zero carbon.
We are actively working on the problems faced by owners of Listed Buildings who are struggling to make meaningful improvements to their properties.
As part of our group’s goals and aspirations, we advise other groups locally on the work we have done and the lessons learnt, in the hope that this will help others avoid the speedbumps we’ve had to negotiate along the road and achieve their goals more easily.
We work closely with Essex CC, Uttlesford DC and Littlebury PC on Sustainability issues that affect us all in the drive to a carbon neutral future.

A Parish Council initiative. Sustainable Hadstock’s aim is to make this sociable, educational and fun whilst helping us all to create a more sustainable future for ourselves and future generations. Sustainable Hadstock is a residents’ initiative to help us all understand what we can do as individuals and as a village to create a more sustainable, low carbon future. It is focused on practical actions we can take – in our homes, how we live and for our natural environment. There are three major streams: Home&Energy; Biodiversity&Nature and Waste. A presentation summarising our activities in 2024 is on our website.

Thaxted River Wardens (now know as River Champions) work in conjunction with Essex Wildlife Trust. We are responsible for taking an interest in and monitoring our stretch of the River Chelmer. We take monthly three minute kick samples in two designated areas of the river. Our data is recorded on Cartographer, a national database. In addition we have several wildlife cameras in operation to record wildlife. These are used by us in conjunction with mink rafts as part of the mink eradication programme and it is hoped to able to reintroduce water voles locally.
