Distributed Data Centres to Deliver Low-Cost Domestic Heating

There is an initiative being trialed where micro-data centers are being installed in an outbuilding, and the heat generated by all the computers is reused to heat a house, and provide hot water. In a trial of the idea with a couple based in Essex, they have had their domestic energy bill drop from £375 a month to £40.

The scheme uses Thermify’s Heatubs, which uses the waste heat from distributed cloud computing installations, to provide low cost heating. The trial described is run by UK Power Network’s SHIELD initiative, which aims to offering  scalable, innovative solutions that helps lower energy bills for those most in need, while supporting the transition to Net Zero.
